Why Compliance and Culture Must Go Hand in Hand

By Caroline Sheridan

Some 20 years ago, long before I founded Sheridan Worldwide, I sat on the other side of the table as both Head of Compliance and Human Resources in the securities industry. I remember my days were filled with rules, regulations, and making sure every ‘i’ was dotted and every ‘t’ crossed. It was important work, but I felt pulled towards something different — full-time on people, their growth, development, and helping individuals and teams thrive.

Fast forward to today, and I find myself ironically as CEO of Sheridan Worldwide doing both again. Much of our time is spent ensuring our policies, processes, and standards meet the highest bar. The world is faster, more digital, more connected, and that means the risks are too. From cyber threats to data protection, from global faculty engagement to disaster recovery, compliance has expanded into something much broader – not a tick-box, but a culture.

At Sheridan Worldwide, we take this seriously. That’s why we have invested in:

  • Cyber Essentials Plus certification – because resilience against cyber risks it’s something we all have to keep front of mind.
  • Vulnerability scanning and disaster recovery planning – because protecting data and ensuring continuity are not optional extras.
  • Global faculty compliance checks – because our people, wherever they are in the world, represent our values and our standards.

In many ways, I’ve come full circle. What once felt like two different worlds — compliance and people development — are, in reality, so deeply connected. You can’t build a thriving, values-led culture without the right foundations. And you can’t sustain compliance without investing in the people who live those standards every day.

At Sheridan, that’s what we strive to do: combine process with people, compliance with culture, rules with relationships. It’s the balance that creates organisations where brilliance can be realised and performance soar.

How we do things really matters!

So today I look back on the years spent in the compliance function and deeply appreciate all it taught me. Funny how something you think you left behind can bring you what you need most in the present!!
